95 percent of U.S. ATMs run on Windows XP

95 percent of all ATMs installed in the United States, working on the basis of Windows XP. It is reported by Bloomberg citing Robert Johnston (Robert Johnston), marketing director of NCR, which is the country’s largest supplier of ATMs.

Term extended support Windows XP, which was released twelve years ago, expires April 8, 2014. After this date, Microsoft will stop releasing updates for the OS, which dramatically lowers resistance machines on XP before the hacker attacks. Most ATM operators are planning to upgrade their machines to Windows 7, but the assessment of experts surveyed by Bloomberg, “migration” in the period until April 8, will have time to perform only fifteen percent of devices.

Go to Windows 7 can be complicated, particularly in that part of the ATM is used too old “iron”. To upgrade to a newer operating system, your computer will need to change that entails additional costs.

At the same time, the agency notes that the number of ATMs run on Windows XP Embedded - Windows XP version for embedded systems. Her support (and, as a consequence, update) will be Microsoft until 2016.

In the USA there are 420,000 ATMs and around the world - more than three million. On the part of ATMs can be used even older than Windows XP, the system - for example, Windows 2000, published in 2000.
